Why hand strip? Some breeds have double coats; the undercoat is soft and short, whereas the top coat is made up of coarse/wiry longer hairs. Hand stripping maintains the correct coat texture (making the coat easier to keep). If this type of coat is clipped then it becomes fluffy and can become dull. Hand stripping helps the coat colour to remain stronger and brighter. Hand stripping means pulling out the dead top coat. This is usually done by gently stretching the skin, applying grooming chalk to the coat and using the thumb and forefinger to grip the hairs and pull them out. Stripping the coat when done correctly, does not hurt the dog in any way, because the coat that is being stripped is already loose and dead. A silky coat will require hand stripping every 4 to 5 weeks. A wire coat will require hand stripping when the coat is 'fully blown'. This means that the top coat is dead and ready to be removed. Normally around every 6 months. Clippers may be used on a pet dog that is hand stripped, on sensitive areas such as the groin area, the ears and the face. Hand stripping your pet dog is normally finished off with scissors, which would not affect the natural life stages of the coat. Can all dogs be handstripped? Sometimes castrated/neutered dogs can not be stripped because the change in hormones can affect the texture of the coat making it too soft to hand strip. Elderly dogs may not be suitable as it can take a long time. Some dogs with skin complaints may not be able to be hand stripped. Some dogs may not have the correct coat for handstripping.
Matt removal is an extremely important consideration when wanting to keep a 'long length' coat for your dog. However, removing matts which are tight and severe can be very painful and distressing for the dog and in these cases it is just not possible to maintain length to the coat. The coat must be completely free from any tangles, knots, and matting before bathing or clipping can begin. the health and welfare of the dogs in our care always comes first. In the worst case scenario, the coat may need to be completely clipped off to remove severe matts. You will be asked to sign a consent form for this to take place and it will be discussed with you. Please remember that the coat will grow back and we can work together to ensure that the new coat stays matt free for future visits. Home care is just as important as the groom itself and we will happily offer any advice that we believe will benefit you and your dog. Unfortunately, in these circumstances matt removal could incur additional charges. Matt removal is an intense procedure, it is very time consuming and requires the use of specialist products, it can also cause more wear and tear on equipment. Not to mention that the dog will often need to take extra rests, needing constant reassurance. Please note there is a charge of £10.00 added to your normal grooming price. We NEVER de-matt puppies, infirm/elderly or aggressive dogs. We will also only DEMATT a small area of coat. No more than 15 minutes.
